Smart Start
Smart Start is a practical course that happens on farm in an active learning environment. It provides basic skills on livestock handling, preparation for calving, milking and mating. It also has a strong focus on animal welfare while ensuring you stay safe in the workplace.

This course will set you up well to progress into Level 3 training.

Prerequisites
This course is designed to be the perfect stepping stone for pre-apprenticeship and for new staff in the industry.

Agriculture Skills - Level 2
With support and supervision you'll learn to complete a range of dairy farming production tasks, safely and efficiently.

This course takes 7 months to complete and you can start at anytime.
Qualification
New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Agriculture) (Dairy Farming) Level 2.

NZ Apprentice
An apprentice will work alongside their employer to grow their skills, and will ‘earn while they learn’, attend local learning events and gain NZQA-recognised qualifications.
As an apprentice you'll receive personal mentoring and extra support from your Primary ITO Training Adviser. They will meet with you and your employer regularly throughout the year to help you set goals and review your progress.
Your local Primary ITO Training Adviser can talk you through the available apprenticeship options. An apprenticeship can take anywhere between 2 to 3.5 years to complete.

Milk Harvesting
You'll learn how to safely milk animals and maintain strict cleanliness of the equipment and machinery to ensure quality milk. You'll also learn to effectively manage dairy effluent.

This course takes 12 months to complete and you can start anytime.
Qualification
New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Milk Harvesting) Level 3.
This qualification is made up of the following three short courses:
- Milk Quality - Stage 1
- Milk Smart Principles
- Dealing with Dairy Farm Effluent

Milk Smart Principles
This programme provides a solid grounding in understanding how to milk dairy stock and identifying and treating problems in livestock.

Duration and start dates
This course takes 4 months to complete (1 x workshop + 1-hour assessment 3 months later). You can start this course anytime.
Qualification
Certificate in Milk Smart Principles.

Milk Quality (Stage 1)
You'll understand what's required to maintain cleanliness and hygiene to ensure quality milk output. You'll learn about cleaning processes, plant and equipment maintenance and undertake risk analysis while developing solutions.

Duration and start dates
This course takes 6 months to complete (2 x workshops + 1-hour assessment 3 months later). This course is run all year round, even when farms are not milking.
Qualification
Certificate in On-farm Milk Quality (Stage 1).

Comprehensive First Aid
This course covers all of the essentials and more. It is the minimum requirement for high risk workplaces, and it meets the Department of Labour First Aid for Workplaces Standard.
Duration and start dates
The time commitment for this course is 12 hours over two days. You can choose to do the whole course in a face to face environment or mix it up with online learning. Opting for the mixed delivery gives you the choice and flexibility to complete your training when and where you choose.
Qualification
New Zealand Red Cross First Aid Certificate.
