New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Fishing with strands in: Shellfish, Wet Fish, Frozen Fish

This programme is recommended for operators in either frozen fish, wet fish or shellfish operations who are involved with stock management and other aquaculture operations.
Focused on upskilling operators in the handling, processing and packing in the commercial fishing industry, our three commercial fishing programmes have a heavy focus on hygiene, food safety and workplace safety requirements, with each stranded programme covering the key specialist skills required in either a fish and fish products, shellfish, wet fish, or frozen fish operation.
Employers of learners can customise the skills and knowledge to meet their organisational needs – this is known as a Limited Credit Package (LCP) version of this programme. Covering all the fundamental skills, LCPs are great taster courses for entry level employees providing a pathway towards a full New Zealand Certificate.
This programme takes 6-8 months.
Graduates of all strands will be able to comply with workplace safety and hygiene and food safety requirements relating to commercial fishing.
Graduates can describe protection of the marine environment relating to commercial fishing activities and are able to communicate and interact effectively within the workplace.
Graduates can describe commercial shellfish harvesting activities and post-harvest handling of shellfish.
Wet fish strand
Graduates can describe commercial fishing and post-harvest wet fish handling as part of commercial fishing activities.
Frozen fish strand
Graduates will complete either a land or sea-based processing context, or a point of sale context, as follows:
- Land or sea-based
- Graduates of the general frozen fish vessel operations strand can describe commercial fishing activities and post-harvest handling of frozen fish as part of commercial fishing.
- Point of sale
- Graduates of the frozen fish machine operator strand can describe machine operation to produce frozen fish product on a commercial fishing vessel.
