Our Arboriculture Apprenticeship
Duration: 27 months
Level: 3 and 4
This comprehensive programme is ideal for people who are currently working in the industry with some general work experience and who have a desire to develop a career in Arboriculture.
Apprentices will learn skills to allow them to work in a self-managed capacity with some responsibility for other staff and have an overview of key aspects of Arboriculture operations.
You’ll learn to:
Level 3 (12 months):
- You’ll learn to work effectively in a team, follow health and safety procedures, operate chainsaws and chippers, carry out ground and climbing duties (including aerial rescue), and undertake basic tree work such as planting, pruning, and supervised felling. You’ll also develop knowledge of tree identification, plant biology, arboriculture codes of practice, and working safely near electrical hazards.
Level 4 (15 months):
- You’ll progress to supervising others, climbing and undertaking aerial rescues, pruning mature trees, sectional and advanced felling techniques, chainsaw maintenance, and visual tree assessments. You’ll also build deeper knowledge of soils, tree health and tree biology.
New To Industry Training
Duration: 7 months
Level: 2
This programme sets learners up with the foundational knowledge and skills required to be safe and confidently undertake their role.
This is an ideal qualification for new team members with a natural alignment to induction programmes.
For learners, this is a great first step before entering into an apprenticeship.
You’ll learn to:
- Carry out practical tasks associated with an entry level role in arboriculture.
- Use safe work practices in an arboriculture role.
Duration: 12 months
Level: 3
Building on foundational skills, level 3 will launch a career in arboriculture off the ground by learning how to climb and undertake one-person aerial rescues. Learners will be able to identify trees and understand basic nomenclature, and be able to use a chipper and undertake groundsman duties, and learn basic felling techniques.
Learners can complete this programme as the first year of the apprenticeship.
You’ll learn to:
- Work effectively in a team, follow health and safety procedures, operate chainsaws and chippers, carry out ground and climbing duties (including aerial rescue), and undertake basic tree work such as planting, pruning, and supervised felling. You’ll also develop knowledge of tree identification, plant biology, arboriculture codes of practice, and working safely near electrical hazards.
Duration: 15 months
Level: 4
Learners will master how to conduct a visual tree assessment, identify amenity tree health problems, and expand on climbing, felling and pruning techniques.
This can be completed as the second half of the arboriculture apprenticeship.
You’ll learn to:
- Progress to supervising others, climbing and undertaking aerial rescues, pruning mature trees, sectional and advanced felling techniques, chainsaw maintenance, and visual tree assessments. You’ll also build deeper knowledge of soils, tree health and tree biology.
Training For Supervisors & Managers
Duration: 12 months
Level: 5
Focused on advanced tree climbing and rigging, working with cranes and felling using machine assistance, this technical programme could advance learners’ careers. For employers, having qualified staff with an increased technical skill set, could add value to securing contracts.
You’ll learn to:
- lead, coach and manage teams
- apply arboriculture law and carry out a tree inspection
- understand tree support systems, their installation and maintenance
- understand the requirements and process of transplanting large trees using specialist equipment, and post planting care
- describe hazards of machine assisted tree felling and fell trees using machine assistance
- prepare for and undertake arboriculture work with cranes, apply risk management and hazard control
- demonstrate advanced tree climbing and undertake a simulated aerial rescue
- calculate, plan and use advanced rigging, and describe speed line system installation.
Duration: 12 months
Level: 5
This programme is focused on end-to-end project management and a high level of technical knowledge to lead arboriculture operations.
You’ll learn to:
- apply knowledge of work scheduling, risk management, site safety, hazard management planning and reporting on tree work operations.
- apply knowledge of site-specific tree selection and survey when carrying out routine tree assessment and valuation and report findings.
- monitoring and manage site works to protect established trees on construction sites.
- evaluate a site for amenity trees, selecting trees and preparing a planting plan.
- Identify a range of conifers, exotic trees and native trees, and research and evaluate trees found in arboriculture operations.
- write analytical reports.
- plan and manage complex tree work.
- lead, coach and manage teams.
- apply arboriculture law.
