Summary

This refreshed Level 3 Nursery programme has been developed to support Mitre 10 garden retail teams by strengthening plant knowledge, practical nursery skills, and confidence when advising customers on the shop floor.

Learners will build a deeper understanding of plant structure, growth, and care, while developing skills that support healthy plant stock, safe work practices, effective teamwork, and quality customer advice in a garden retail environment.

Throughout the programme, learners will:

  • Connect with other industry learners through 7 off-job training days
  • Learn from experienced tutors during off-job class days
  • Receive ongoing guidance and support from local Training Advisers over the 12-month programme.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course graduates will be capable of working under limited supervision with responsibility for work outcomes. Graduates will be able to:

  • Work as an effective member of a team including communication and interaction with team members and colleagues.
  • Apply safe work practices in the workplace.
  • Describe soil properties and their effect on plant growth.
  • Identify and describe plant pests, diseases, and disorders, and methods of prevention and control.
  • Identify and describe weeds, and methods of prevention and control.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of plant structure, functions and processes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of plant nomenclature.
  • Identify annuals, herbaceous perennials, biennials and bulbs and their use.
  • Describe the physical characteristics, and range of, woody stemmed plants and their use.
  • Describe and carry out monitoring of plant pests and diseases.
  • Describe key features, principles and benefits of integrated pest management in the primary sector.
  • Describe workflow management in a horticulture operation.
  • Explain agrichemical use for primary sector applications.
