This programme is now open to enrolments from self-employed owner/operators working in the pest sector.
Summary
Learn all about safe work practices, the impacts of pest control and how to communicate and record information. There are two versions of this programme, Pest Animal and Pest Plant, and strands in Pest Control and Pest Monitoring.
This programme incorporates industry feedback by integrating map reading and compass skills into the training, alongside modern technological tools like GPS and altimeters. This approach ensures that individuals working remotely can learn how to stay safe and navigate through a range of environments, including native bush, farms, and rural recreational areas, for different durations of time.
Depending on the strand and context of the programme, learners will achieve one of the following qualifications:
- New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations (Level 3) Rural Pest Control (Pest Animal)
- New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations (Level 3) Rural Pest Monitoring (Pest Animal)
- New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations (Level 3) Rural Pest Control (Pest Plant)
- New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations (Level 3) Rural Pest Monitoring (Pest Plant)
If learners complete the Pest Animal Control strand they will also learn how to prepare and use traps or toxins.
The Pest Animal Monitoring strand will teach them to either prepare for and carry out transect, inspection based population monitoring or surveying.
To complete this programme, vehicle training will need to be undertaken at an additional cost. Details on our vehicles training can be found here.
For learners enrolled in the pest animal strand there is now an optional weather unit. (US 19138).
Please note, firearms training is not covered in this programme.
Graduates of this programme can go on to further training with supplementary credit programmes available in:
- Pest Control
- Pest Monitoring
These SCP's provide bespoke additional training for those looking to further a career in the pest sector.
Learning outcomes
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Carry out pest operations safely to contribute positively to biosecurity and public health and enjoyment
- Communicate, report and record information to meet requirements in a pest operations workplace.
Graduates of the Rural Pest Control strand will also be able to:
- Operate vehicles in a rural environment.
- Identify and control relevant pest types in a rural environment.
Graduates of the Rural Pest Monitoring strand will also be able to:
- Operate vehicles in a rural environment.
- Monitor relevant pest types in a rural environment.
