Supporting literacy

17 May 2024

Primary ITO has secured almost $50,000 in funding to continue the important mahi of supporting priority learners with literacy assistance through their training.

The funding will enable priority learners to receive the support of mentors from Literacy Aotearoa, a nationwide provider of literacy services. Where a learner has been identified as needing literacy support, they will be paired with an expert mentor who will provide one-on-one reading, writing, and typing assistance as required to help the learner complete book work and assessment to progress through the training.

Mel Weston, Primary ITO Learning Support Team Leader, is pleased to get the funding approved from Te Pūkenga.

“We had Literacy Aotearoa support for learners last year, with some really good outcomes. They support the learner with one-on-one reading and writing assistance and can even sit in during a class to help with taking notes, so the learner can pay full attention to the class discussion and participate in that. Some learners struggle with keeping up with both.”

Around 110 Primary ITO learners have been supported by Literacy Aotearoa in the last 14 months. This year’s funding will help even more learners, alongside the regular support that Training Advisers provide to each of their learners, and other initiatives including group study sessions and additional support for those with learning challenges including dyslexia.
